Lichfield Diamonds round-up

Lichfield Diamonds LFC 1 Solihull Borough 1
Lichfield Diamonds put in another good performance against league leaders Borough, but the game should have been over in the first 20 minutes as Diamonds missed a host of one-on-one chances with the keeper.

Paying the price for their wastefulness, Diamonds went behind in time added on in the first half.

In the second period, Diamonds were not so dominant but still created several good chances which brought good saves from the keeper.

With 15  minutes left, Lichfield switched to three up front – a move which provided an instant reward as Mags Baileys cross-field pass split the visiting defence for Karen Clough to run through and beat the keeper with a low shot.

Diamonds cruised into the semi finals with a comfortable victory.

The usual suspects were on the scoresheet as Alison Livermore netted a hat-trick, Shannon Bernes Jones bagged a brace and Laura Eggington chalked a goal up.

But it was the depth of the squad which was most impressive as Holly Jackson, Loz Bailey and Charlotte Batey also scored.

Early starts do not suit the U12 side and it showed once more as they looked lethargic and distinctly average compared to the high standards they’ve set themselves in recent games.

Despite the slow start, Diamonds where soon three in front with Gardner, Twine and Meehan on target.

Markfield pulled one back before half time after capitalising on a lack of communication from the defence. The second half didn’t pan out much better with the defence losing their shape at times. Fortunately goalkeeper Witton was in fine form and made some vital saves.

Diamonds managed to add two more through Dixon and Twine, with Markfield also finding the net. Special mention to both Diamonds goalkeepers for some excellent keeping.

Diamonds appear to be coming into form just at the right time as they battle to hold on to second place in the league. With Chelaston in third, it was another important game.

Amy Bardell added a bit more bite and power at the back and after a goalless first half Diamonds stepped up the pace in the second period with two goals from Katie Hitchcock.

On a slope that made Yeovil Town’s pitch look flat, Diamonds toiled uphill for the first half and went behind to a breakaway goal, playing the first half as though they had turned up for a friendly tea party rather  than a competitive game.

The half time talk put things right, though. Looking much more business-like, Diamonds secured the equaliser when Niamh Bowdler forced a defender off the ball and crossed for Elizabeth Palmer to fire home.

In midfield Charlotte Jarvis began to dominate and centre back Alex Buck made some probing runs. Eventually the pressure told with Bowdler delivering a cool finish when through on goal to seal the victory.
