A Facebook group has been set up in protest at the plans to build a traditional mosque in Lichfield.

As revealed exclusively by The Lichfield Blog earlier this week, local politicians have been approached regarding the building of a mosque complete with dome, minaret and audible calls to prayer.

Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant has said that he felt the plans were “inappropriate” for a heritage city such as Lichfield and now a group on the social networking site Facebook has echoed his thoughts.

One member of the group said:

“Our little beautiful city will be wrecked with an awful great big thing like that here.”

Another posted added:

“There is no way we will have a mosque overshadow our beautiful cathedral city.”

And another member of the group claimed Lichfield’s traditional feel would be at risk if a mosque were to be built.

“I’ve been all over this world came back to Lichfield – it’s one of the last unspoilt bastions of Englishness. I don’t object to a mosque, but I do object to the location.”

However other members of the group have questioned the motives of those who are against the proposed mosque.

One poster said:

“This group is pathetic. Are you scared of other cultures? You have churches in Lichfield, why not have mosques?”

One possible way to settle whether or not a mosque should be built in Lichfield, is to have a referendum on the subject.

How would it work? Part 3, Schedule 12, paragraph 18, sub-paragraphs 4 and 5 of the 1972 Local Government Act stipulate that if 10 or more local people vote for a poll on any subject of their choosing, their district authority is obliged to organise one.
This is how it works. 1) Six residents must sign a letter announcing that a parish meeting will take place, at which a motion will be prposed calling for a referendum on the subject.

2)The meeting must be advertised at least seven days in advance and must take place after 6pm.

    3) Tell local leaders and the press about the meeting. 4) Ensure that at least 10 people on the the electoral roll turn up. 5) Propose a motion that a parish poll should be held on whether there should be a referendum on the subject.

    6) Make sure the motion is carried by at least 10 electors, or one third of those present.

7)Tell the local authority. Under the Act, the parish poll must be held within 14 to 25 days on a date set by the authority. 8) Canvas the parish. 9)Counting will be carried out by the authority’s returning officer. 10) The result will have no legal power but will help to demonstrate public opinion.
