Lichfield’s much awaited Speakers’ Corner will launch in May with a star-studded ceremony.

The celebrations will kick off at 10.30am on May 2 at the Dam Street site, and run through with a varied programme of events until 3.30pm, when the day will be brought to a close with a performance by Intimate Theatre.

The Corner will be formally launched in a ceremony at 12.30pm led by television and radio presenter Joanne Malin and featuring local dignitaries including Councillor John Wilks, Chairman of Lichfield District Council, Councillor David Smith, Leader of Lichfield District Council, Councillor David Smedley, Leader of Lichfield City Council and Lichfield’s brand new Town Crier.

Chair of Lichfield’s Speakers’ Corner Founding Committee, Canon Pete Wilcox said:

“It promises to be a memorable event.  There’ll be something for everyone, whether you come for the whole day, or dip in and out.  There’ll be presentations by local schools and the Youth Forum, performances by Fusezirque! and Intimate Theatre and special guest appearances by Jo Malin and ex-Corrie star Chris Walker.  So come and help to launch Lichfield’s very own Speakers’ Corner and take part in a truly historic day.”

The only other permanent Speakers’ Corner outside London was launched in Nottingham by Eddie Izzard last year and inaugurated by the Justice Secretary Jack Straw in February this year.

Nottingham’s Speakers’ Corner has already proved very popular encouraging stimulating debate on issues ranging from crime and technology through to football and encouraging more visitors to the city.

Peter Bradley, Director of Speakers’ Corner Trust, said:

“We’re so pleased that people living in Lichfield have embraced the concept of a Speakers’ Corner in the heart of their city. When launched Lichfield will be home to the second only Speakers’ Corner outside London.

“Steeped in history and famous for its contribution to politics, science and the arts, there is no denying Lichfield is the perfect location. It will also be a fitting tribute to Samuel Johnson during his anniversary year.”
