Lichfield residents could find out next week whether a prison will be built on the outskirts of the city.

Curborough is on the list of 76 proposed sites which were being considered for the so-called Titan prisons which were scrapped last week.

However, the Government still intends to build new prisons capable of hosting 1,500 prisoners and speculation is rife that the sites being considered for the Titan jails are on the list for the reduced capacity facilities now being drawn up.

The Birmingham Mail has reported that two of the new prison sites will be named in the next few days.

While the exact plans for Curborough – should it be one of the sites chosen – are not yet known, the published Titan shortlist indicates it would sit on the site of the proposed Eco Town which has already seen fierce opposition from local residents.

I also noticed on that list the Cemex quarry site at Weeford. I wonder what the residents of Curborough think about a prison instead of an “Eco Town”.
