Broadcaster and Strictly Come Dancing star, John Sergeant has been speaking about spending time in Lichfield and his fascination with Samuel Johson.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Sergeant enthused about spending his weekends in Lichfield with friends:

“It’s a pleasure to sit in a peaceful garden, chat with friends and enjoy the view of Lichfield Cathedral.”

It turns out Lichfield was a good fit for him, too, given his admiration of Lichfield’s very own Samuel Johnson. He explained:

“My stepfather, an Oxford don, was very like Samuel Johnson; eccentric and wonderfully clever. He was an expert on Johnson and I’ve been studying the great man since I was 14.”

Sergeant held the position of President at the Johnson Society in 2003. The Johnson Society is a registered charity who aim to maintain interest in and preserve the works of the famous lexicographer. They also organise the Johnson birthday celebrations which happen every September. This year is the tercentenary.

Lichfield Cathedral is another pleasure that Sergeant takes from visiting our little city.

“Going to evensong at the beautiful Lichfield Cathedral is special. The sun shines in through the west windows and the singing of the choir is nostalgic and uplifting.”

The Garrick is another haunt with Sergeant sometimes performing there himself.
