Michael Fabricant, MP for Lichfield has spoken of his amazement at the Conservative gains in the recent local and European elections.

The Conservative party MP said,

“These are extraordinary results.  Politically, Staffordshire has become the new Surrey.  We are now the Conservative heartland.”

His comments follow the results of the European elections on Sunday which saw the Conservatives take a 28.% share of the vote, with Labour on 17%.

“In the Euro Elections in Lichfield and Burntwood, the Conservatives came top with almost four times as many votes as Labour who came behind UKIP and the Liberal Democrats who won only marginally more votes than the Labour Party.”

Fabricant also speculated that the European results may give an indication of the kind of results to expect in the next general election.

“Even in Hednesford, previously a safe Labour town, their candidate – who is replacing Tony Wright as the Labour Parliamentary candidate at the next General Election – came a poor third.  She must now be wondering whether she can hold Cannock Chase for Labour in the General Election when it is finally called.”

All candidates will have their expenses scrutinised at the General election, and candidates failing to explain their descrepencies will be given a very hard time by the electorate. I think the policies of the parties will take second place to this issue.
