The new Chairman of Lichfield District Council, Cllr Joseph Powell has launched Lichfield Festival at a glittering charity reception at the Lichfield Garrick.

The civic reception, which was held in the Piano Bar at the Garrick was hosted by Cllr Powell for civil dignatories from across Staffordshire and invited guests, including Lichfield Festival’s Chairman.

Entertainment was provided by singer and saxophonist Ray Galeto and his foot-stomping jump ‘n’ jive band, The Giants following a buffet supper and drinks.

Cllr Powell said: “This was my first civic event since I took on the role of chairman, and what an event to start with. Civics from right across the region came to my reception. They all agreed the show was fantastic, and a great start to what is sure to be a thoroughly enjoyable festival. I would like to thank the Lichfield Garrick for having us and to everyone who joined me for the reception, helping to raise money for my two chosen charities – Young Carers Association (Lichfield branch) and Rocklands Special School.”

Nick Sedgwick, Chairman of the Lichfield Festival, added: “We are delighted that the Chairman chose the opening concert of the 2009 Lichfield Festival to hold his charity civic reception. The festival has a close working relationship with the council and, in particular, the Lichfield Garrick and we launched the whole festival at this event.”
