New Lichfield City FC skipper confident ahead of new season

Lichfield City FC’s new captain has spoken at his pride in being handed the armband.

Sam Geffen was given the role by manager Dean Gilbert after previous skipper Scott Burnside stepped down from the post.

And now the 22-year-old is vowing to repay the faith his manager has shown in him.

He told the club’s official website:

“I’d like to thank the management team for giving me the opportunity to captain the team this year. The gaffer has made several new signings with higher league experience that should stand us in good stead as we prepare for our first season in division two.

“Pre-season has gone well, even if it did start with a 7-0 defeat at the hands of Midland Alliance side Coventry Sphinx. I think the players learnt a lot from that game and performances have steadily improved since. A 0-0 draw at home with Premier division side Nuneaton Griff was followed by a big win against division one side Northfield town in a performance that showed the true potential of the squad.

“Since taking over as captain I’ve started to truly appreciate the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes at this football club. I see it as part of my job to make sure that this effort and determination is matched by the players when they take the pitch on a Saturday afternoon.”

Geffen’s first competitive clash as skipper will come on Saturday (August 15) at home against Perrywood in the cup.
