Lichfield City FC got their season off to the perfect start with an Endsleigh Cup win over Perrywood.

But Dean Gilbert’s men were made to work for their victory after getting off to a slow start, culminating in an error by new skipper Sam Geffen. He fluffed his header back to the keeper and allowed the Perrywood striker to net the opener.

Debutant keeper Ashley Dutton came to the rescue and prevented City from falling further behind before the interval when he tipped a goal-bound effort onto the post and away to safety.

Manager Gilbert’s half-time words clearly had the desired effect on his charges as they stepped up a gear in the second period.

The equaliser arrived when James Lawson powered home a Dean Boonham corner. The provider then turned goalscorer as Boonham put City in front from the penalty spot.

And the win was secured when John Rob Dutton added a third to secure a second round tie against West Midlands Police.

Lichfield’s next action seems them travel to Coton Green Reserves on August 22.
