The pitch turned out to be not as attractive as the setting on the banks of the Avon as Lichfield Diamonds struggled with the poor surface – but it was purely down to an excellent goalkeeper that the score remained even until well into the first half.

Twice diving at Alison Livermore’s feet when she was through on goal, the keeper then made more good saves from Jess Adams, Connie Shutt and an unbelievable save to keep out a Shannon Jones effort.

But eventually the pressure told when a Shutt effort deflected in off Livermore which was quickly followed by a goal from Adams.

Livermore made it 3-0 at the change with a well placed shot inside the post.

Diamonds were much improved on last week’s game with Charlotte Batey pulling the strings in midfield and getting her reward with a goal from a well-taken volley from Livermore’s corner. Holly Jackson netted the fifth with another volley from the same position, again from a Livermore corner.

With Diamonds defenders working well as a unit with keeper Sophie White, the city girls never looked in trouble, but a few weaknesses are still there which girls must start to put right.
