Rehearsals are in full swingy for the next instalment from the Lichfield Garrick Rep Company.

Andrew Hall is back in the directing chair after the success with Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? which transferred to London’s West End.

The Entertainer is the story of Archie Rice, a struggling comedian and a music hall performer in an age when music halls had all but disappeared. Driven by dreams of stardom and desperation to equal his father’s success, Archie finds himself a man out of his time, a selfish, deceitful has been, headlining a tacky revue in a rundown seaside town.

Family tensions reach boiling point as both his wife and his dying father find themselves victims of his sad decline. Throughout it all, Archie jigs and jabbers before his ever diminishing audience and does what it takes to keep the show going.

The cast sees John Ashton playing Archie Rice with Lin Blakley, Emily Pennant-Rea and Lichfield actors Gerry Hinks and Rob Pass, who recently graduated from the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute in New York.

Tom Roberts, Garrick Rep Producer, said:

“Once again we have a fantastic team in place for what promises to be a wonderful production. We are one of only two theatres in the country to have been given permission to do this play this year and I urge people to catch it while they can. Coming from the team that produced the sensational Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, this is quality theatre on your doorstep.”

The Entertainer is at the Lichfield Garrick from October 8 to 31. Tickets, priced £15 (£10 students) are available by calling 01543 412121 or visiting
