Following a major appeal the Lichfield Garrick theatre has found a brave performer to take on the role of Britannia in its production of The Entertainer by John Osborne.

Sarah Lee, a photographic model from Burton-on-Trent answered the call and joined the cast for final rehearsals this week.

Producer, Tom Roberts, explained:

“We have been looking for a lady for some time now and I am delighted and relieved to have found Sarah. This is a tricky role as it requires partial nudity.

“Sarah will portray the character Britannia – complete with union jack shield, trident and helmet! The play centres around music hall entertainer, Archie Rice, played famously in the film by Laurence Olivier. During the routines in those days, partially clad models were often used onstage to bring stories and anecdotes to life. It was not seen as tacky – simply a common device of the day.”

Sarah admitted she couldn’t wait to take her place on stage. She said:

“I’m really looking forward to my role at the Garrick.  This is a great opportunity for me to work along side a great team of actors. It’s a bit nerve-racking but very exciting at the same time.  I’ve been given such a warm welcome by everyone working on this production.”

The Entertainer is the story of Archie Rice, a struggling comedian and a music hall performer in an age when music halls had all but disappeared. Driven by dreams of stardom and desperation to equal his father’s success, Archie finds himself a man out of his time, a selfish, deceitful has been, headlining a tacky revue in a rundown seaside town.

Family tensions reach boiling point as both his wife and his dying father find themselves victims of his sad decline. Throughout it all, Archie jigs and jabbers before his ever diminishing audience and does what it takes to keep the show going.

The Entertainer is showing at the Lichfield Garrick until October 31, with a variety of matinee and evening performances. Tickets cost £15 and £10 students.
