Police  at Lichfield are hunting a thief who snatched a handbag from an 82-year old lady as she sat in a car.

The incident happened at around 2.45pm yesterday afternoon (Oct 8th), on Eastern Avenue on the outskirts of the city.

The thief rode up to the car on a bike and engaged the woman in conversation, asking her the time. He then leaned through the window and grabbed her bag before riding off along Eastern Avenue and into Gilbert Road.

Detective Inspector Jed White of Trent Valley police described the theft as despicable. He added:

“This individual deliberately targeted an elderly lady and stole from her after gaining her trust. It really is the lowest of the low.”

Although badly shaken, the woman was not injured. The thief is said to be in his late 30s or early 40s and has a moustache. Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who saw the thief riding away along Eastern Avenue and then Gilbert Road to contact them.

Anyone with information is asked to call Lichfield police on 0300 123 44 55 or, contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
