Lichfield Diamonds 2 Cannock LFC 0

It’s never easy to play the same team two weeks running and with Cannock coming out determined to make amends after last week’s cup defeat, it was the visitors who started the brighter in the opening 20 minutes.

Gradually Diamonds took a grip of midfield with new signing Hayley Bennett getting used to her new teammates.

Diamonds took the lead when Karen Clough’s curling shot fooled the keeper and went in at the back post.

In a game of few chances it was Diamonds that carried the greater goal threat with Cannock limited to free kicks.

Clough extended the lead early in the second half with a crisp left foot finish across the keeper which sealed the points.

Sally West made a welcome return to Diamonds after playing for their junior teams and nearly made it a scoring one with a low shot that brought another good save from Hannah Waddel in Cannock’s goal.

A strong run into the box from Lyndsey Hopton ended predictably when she was brought down, Clough stepped up to put away the resulting spot kick only to see it disallowed for an infringement and be denied the chance to retake by a referee’s mistake which will cost him a £10 cheque to Cancer Research.

Late on Diamonds keeper Jo Sheerin was called into action to tip over a dipping free kick.

With new signings and injured players returning Diamonds are now looking a much more balanced squad again.

In the heart of defence Louise Sharrod and Emma Dagley were superb and a young Tammi Bennett produced a disciplined performance at left back.
