Lichfield Diamonds junior football round-up

Kingshurst Girls U15 3 Lichfield Diamonds U15  5: Diamonds moved into the Central Warwickshire Girls League to toughen up as they get closer to playing Ladies football.

And this League Cup encounter turned out to be a true test as they endured a physical encounter.

Diamonds eventually went in at half time at 1 – 1 after Alison Livermore had equalised.

Rolling their sleeves up for the second half Lichfield got in with and took a deserved lead after Jess Adams turned in a loose ball from a Danni Jones long throw.

Well on top, Diamonds were disappointed to see Kingshurst equalise from the half way line to take the tie into extra time.

Midway through the first period Kingshurst took the lead, bit after the short break Diamonds rallied and came out for the last ten minutes determined not to be beaten.

A strong run through the heart of the defence took Livermore into the box and she made no mistake to level the tye once more.

With only five minutes left of the second half and the visitors well on top Stevie Kneller forced a corner,  Livermore floated it in and it was met with a tremendous header by Connie Shutt to put Diamonds in front again and just a minute later another Livermore corner was tvolleyed in by Shutt to complete a well deserved victory.

Player of the Match: Alison Livermore.

Their early efforts were rewarded with Gardener’s first goal of the season with a sweet left foot finish, quickly followed by an equally good goal from Edwards.

With Harte adding her trademark pearler, the girls looked to be in control. However, they took their foot off the gas and allowed Uttoxeter to get one back before half time.

The second half saw Diamonds playing some good football but with a lapse of concentration at the back the opposition scored another and Lichfield were starting to look shakey.

It was Twine who settled the nerves after she was first to the ball from a Hodges shot.

Edwards then added to her tally and Hodges rounded off a comfortable victory.

Player of the Match: Edwards

Stretton Swifts Girls U12 0 Lichfield Diamonds U12 0: Diamonds threw everything they could at last season’s league champions Stretton as they went in search of a win.

The Lichfield side dominated possession, but without top scorer Steph Speck it was left to Katy Hitchcock to carry the main strike threat and she found the Swifts goalkeeper in fine form.

A point however was enough to keep the City side in pole position in this early stage.

Chellaston Black Sox Girls U11 2 Lichfield Diamonds U11 2: A really tough match with battling spirit saw both teams go home with a point.

Both sides had chances to win the game with shots hitting the woodwork on several occasions.

Diamonds came from 2-0 down after some poor decision making at the heart of defence. The Chellaston team finished their shots well giving first half keeper Ellen Knight no chance.

Lichfield rallied at half time and began to pass the ball and defend strongly. After some great work from Rhianna Cleverly and Niamh Bowdler, a Diamonds corner from Chelsea Czekerlya found Molly Matthews unmarked at the back post where she kept her shot down and finished neatly.

Further pressure eventually told when a cross from Czekerlya was handled in the area and a penalty was awarded. Matthews made no mistake from the spot.

Player of the match: Rhianna Cleverly

Hednesford Girls U10 0 Lichfield Diamonds U10 6: A comfortable victory for Diamonds, despite a couple of players missing.

Lichfield’s passing football returned and Meghan Davey gave them an early lead with Libby Queen adding two more before half time.

In defence Mae Murphy and Kelly Craythorne were solid and Queen took her tally to four in the second half.

Captain Charlotte Jarvis hit a well deserved goal from just outside the box to cap a fine individual and team performance that was full of passing football and easy on the eye.
