Chasetown FC Reserves 1 Wombourne 0

Chasetown FC Reserves were on top throughout their JW Hunt Charity Cup tie against Wombourne with Nick Hawkins grabbing the decisive first half goal.

The pace of the game, played in front of an improved crowd after the first team’s match at Leek Town was called off due to a waterlogged pitch, improved as the evening went on, and the Scholars were dominant throughout the second half with some impressive attacking play.

After a quiet start, the first chance at goal came for Wombourne’s Chris Rhodes but he fired straight at home keeper Martin Taylor, but chances at goal were certainly at a premium as play remained confined to the midfield.

The deadlock was broken midway through the half when a Jamie Hawkins corner met Nick Hawkins whose free header cleared David Scorer in the Wombourne goal to put the hosts in front.

This was the only clean-cut chance for the Scholars in the first period, with both sides continuing to cancel each other out.

Chasetown thought they had doubled their lead on 55 minutes but Daniel O’Callaghan’s shot was disallowed as the whistle had gone for a foul, while Jack Scandrett was denied by the diving Scorer three minutes later.

The Scholars were really beginning to push hard for a second goal, Daniel O’Callaghan crossing nicely to Scandrett but he was prevented from shooting by the defence, while Carl Willetts’ similar cross was collected by Scorer.

The hosts continued to dominate, Daniel Rock’s shot blocked by Scorer on 72 minutes while O’Callaghan and Scandrett kept up their powerful showing in attack.

A late corner from Rock was headed off the line and Scorer produced a volleyball-style manoeuvre to deny substitute Tom Ivers, but the side continued its recent winning run.
