Lichfield RUFC skipper Dave Bassett is delighted with his side’s unbeaten start to the season – but believes the real test is still to come.

The city side take on Aston tomorrow (November 7) ahead of a sequence of tough fixtures.

And Bassett believes a good run through the festive period could set Lichfield up for a successful season.

The captain explained:

“We are massively looking forward to our first big test of the season and are in a confident mood following the unbeaten start to the season, but Aston always provide a solid test with all previous games being very close.

“We have a few injuries but the squad this season is so much stronger that we are confident these will not weaken the side and will provide a great opportunity for those players coming in.

“This game sees us enter a very important part of the season now which will see us playing Dixonians, Ludlow and Bridgnorth, as well as our National Cup third round fixture and Staffs Cup semi-final – all between now and Christmas. This period really will shape our season and although we are confident, we need to make sure we take nothing for granted.”

One player Lichfield will definitely be without tomorrow is Neil Antcliffe who faces a spell on the sidelines after suffering an injury during Lichfield’s 41-3 win at Ashbourne.

Bassett added:

“Neil broke his radius in the game. He has been operated on and had two plates inserted along with some pins. He is now out of hospital and will be out of action for eight to ten weeks.”
