Families from across the region have been enjoying a traditional Christmas at Shugborough Hall.

The festivities kicked off with their candlelit evenings which see the traditional house take on a whole new dimension.

But the fun doesn’t end inside the house – with shopping, entertainment and good food and drink on offer, the evenings are the perfect way to get into the Christmas mood.

The nature of the historic working house meant that a number of characters in traditional costume laid bare the realities of the servants who worked the estate in the past, with maids telling tales of receiving a piece of material for Christmas so they could make a new dress.

Further into the servants’ quarters were the beginnings of a Christmas feast, while the brewers revealed how the festive ales were made – complete with a complementary taster!

What Shugborough do well with their events is cater for a wide range of audiences. While older visitors were able to take in the history of the sprawling estate, younger guests were busy meeting the three real reindeer, having their faces painted and paying a visit to Santa in his grotto.

And after you’ve experienced the sights of Shugborough there was a gift marquee selling a whole host of craft goods and gifts, while food and drink stalls ensured delights such as roasted chestnuts and hot punch kept the winter chill at bay.

Even though the candlelit evenings sold out quickly, there’s more festive fun in store at Shugborough later in December when Santa pays a visit to the estate’s farm.

For more information on that event – and the range of other activities available – visit the Shugborough website.

A very good idea real people to talk to; train to take the strain as well if you can not walk far. Recommend for a day out.
