Warning over bogus council tax workers in Lichfield

boguscallerLichfield residents are being warned after bogus conmen claimed to be from the council tax claims department.

The callers have been telling residents that they have overpaid their council tax and are entitled to refunds before asking for their financial details.

The scam came to light after Lichfield District Council were tipped off by members of the public.

Councillor Michael Wilcox, Cabinet Member for Finance, Revenues and Benefits, said:

“We reported the information we received to the police immediately. I would like to stress that the council never contacts residents to offer council tax refunds over the phone, and if anyone receives this type of call, they should not provide their personal financial details, and should report the call to the police.

“Whilst this type of case is rare, we would urge all residents to always be wary of providing their personal financial details over the phone to anyone who calls them. Any valid caller will be happy for you to return their call through a switchboard number, or for you to pay either at the counter, or online through a valid website.”

Anyone with council tax enquiries is advised to call the council on 01543 308999.

Cllr Wilcox added:

“If anyone is worried they may have provided their details to a false caller, we would recommend they contact the police, and their bank or credit card company.”
