Brinsford 12 Burntwood RUFC 3rds 23

Burntwood 3rds went to the top of their Merit Table after defeating the young offenders at Brinsford 23-12.

The age profile of the two sides was considerable and Paul Rogers’ side were not helped by playing uncontested scrums from the off.

They were under the cosh for the opening 20 minutes as the inmates made a fast start. Burntwood didn’t help their cause by kicking poorly to the opposition. Weak tackling allowed Brinsford to take the lead with a converted try after 20 minutes.

Burntwood finally got into the game in the 10 minutes up to half time and levelled the scores with a fine, individual try by Simon Barker, converted by Chris Edwards.

A change of tactics for the second period made all the difference to the outcome. The visitors kept the ball tight to the forwards forcing Brinsford into a series of infringements. Edwards extended the lead with a penalty before skipper Rogers powered over the line for a try converted by Edwards from the touchline.

Two more Edwards’ penalties sandwiched a cracking try by the home No. 10 to seal an exhausting afternoon’s work although the side will look to improve on their performance next week when they visit Willenhall 3rds.
