Older people in Lichfield and Burntwood warned over phone scam

olderphoneOlder people living in Lichfield and Burntwood are being warned about the latest phone scam trying to con people out of their cash.

Staffordshire County Council Trading Standards and the Pension Service are advising residents to be aware of telephone calls from people claiming to be employed by the Department of Work and Pensions promising additional Winter Fuel Payments and requesting bank details in order to fulfil this.

Winter Fuel Payments are yearly tax free payments to help people aged 60 and over to pay for their heating in the winter.  The advice being given is that there are no additional payments and that any calls people receive should be treated as bogus.

County Councillor Ben Adams, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture said:

“We are keen to alert Staffordshire residents about these bogus calls which are not related to Winter Fuel Payments or the Pension Service in any way.We are advising customers not to give out their bank details under any circumstances to anyone calling in relation to these payments. If anyone has given out information they are advised to contact their bank immediately for further advice.”
