Free taster leisure events are being provided to adult carers in Lichfield and Burntwood.

Staffordshire County Council is putting on the sessions during January and February following a successful £100,000 bid to the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills Transformation Fund.

Taking place in local venues throughout the county, activities will include local and family history groups, arts and crafts, music, dance, yoga, complimentary therapies, gardening, crafts, IT, hair and beauty and much more. Events targeted for young carers aged 19 to 30 years old will also take place, including paintball, go-karting, music, art, climbing and water-sports.

Throughout the course, the county council will be looking to recruit a number of ‘Carers Champions’ who will be asked to assist in next year’s training and for those who attend more than four activities provided will be offered access to longer residential events. Support will also be available to those wishing to participate who could not otherwise do so.

Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, Ben Adams said:

“Staffordshire County Council is pleased to have the opportunity to offer these free leisure activities to carers.  The aim is to provide some time out from their day to day caring duties and hopefully to encourage them to engage in further activities in the future.  Carers provide an enormous contribution in society and it’s great to be able to put the needs of the carers first.”
