Lichfield RUFC skipper calls on players not to get distracted by cup run

Lichfield RUFC captain Dave Bassett has urged his team-mates not to get distracted by the prospect of playing in the last 16 of the National Cup.

The Myrtle Greens disposed of Loughborough RUFC to move within one game of a Regional Final at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena and within three games of a National Final at Twickenham.

But despite being full of praise for his troops as they wade through their fixture backlog, he is keen for them to retain their focus – starting with their next game at Aston Old Ed’s on Saturday (February 13).

Bassett said:

“The games get no easier. On Saturday we travel to promotion rivals Aston Old Ed’s for what is always a tough encounter. Victory would giveus  a healthy lead at the top but we know we will have to be on top form to maintain our drive for promotion as Aston are desperate for the points to keep their own promotion hopes alive.”

And the Lichfield skipper believes his side can build on their win against Loughborough.

“Despite not being on top form, we did enough to secure a victory away from home against tough opponents and stride into the cup semi-final. This was a clear indication of how much we have improved as the season has wore on. Our composure and determination to see out the game in evidence and a real maturity in the face of adversity.”
