Lichfield Mysteries set to perform The Passion

Crucifixion1Lichfield Mysteries are inviting people to a performance of The Passion during the week before Easter.

Directors Stuart Goodwin and Jo Hodgkiss are re-staging three plays from the Mysteries Cycle – Jesus Before Pilate, The Crucifixion and The Burial.

The plays have been re-written to provide one production at Wade Street Church in Lichfield.

During the first part of the production, Jesus is brought before Pilate, who takes advice from his counsellors and seeks the opinion of the massing crowds whether the thief Barabbas or Jesus should be released. Jesus is flogged by the soldiers who then place a crown of thorns on his head and mock him as he staggers to his death with the cross.

The story continues with the Crucifixion, when the soldiers discuss their task and are forgiven by Jesus. They draw lots for his coat.

Friends and sympathisers gather for The Burial and place the body in a cave, covering the opening with a stone.

The Passion is in the church on Maundy Thursday (April 1) at 8.45pm. Admission is free and the performance will last approximately 45 minutes.
