Music lovers and film buffs will be in for a treat in Lichfield city centre when 2008 National Brass Band Finalists Amington Band will be performing live.

Playing in the Three Spires Precinct from 11am to 12.30pm on Saturday (March 27), the band are promoting the stage version of the hit film Brassed Off in which they are appearing at the Garrick next month alongside the Lichfield Players and Garrick Rep Company.

Shoppers will be treated to music featured in the film as part of the Tamworth-based band’s repertoire.

Amington Band’s Musical Director Wesley Kendrick said:

“To be involved in a project like Brassed Off is incredibly exciting. Although our roots lie in enthusiasm rather than mining, we are just as close-knit and passionate about music.”

The 27-strong band will be playing live at every performance when the show opens for a week’s run on April 13.  Audiences can expect to hear the haunting flugelhorn solo Adagio from Concierto de Aranjuez –  famously coined ‘Concierto de Orange Juice’ in the film – as well as Moss’s Floral Dance and the ever-rousing Land of Hope and Glory.

Paul Allen’s play of Mark Herman’s screenplay Brassed Off is set in 1994. Grimley’s pit is marked for closure with the loss of 1,200 jobs and the long-standing colliery band.  In one valiant last attempt, the band fights to make the National Finals, but will pit politics and personal differences stop them from reaching the Albert Hall?

Amington Band, the Lichfield Players and the Garrick Rep Company are performing Brassed Off at the Lichfield Garrick from April 13 to 17 with a Saturday matinee show. Ticket prices are £16.50 or £14.50. To book call the box office on 01543 412121.
