Students from a city school are giving future generations a glimpse of life in 2010 by filling a time capsule at Lichfield Cathedral.

The pupils from King Edward VI School have been collecting items to go into the capsule to be placed in one of the Cathedral’s buttresses.

Among the items chosen were newspapers, photographs, a school tie, a low energy lightbulb and a mobile phone.

A spokesperson for the school said:

“Choosing items was so difficult, because we now take so much for granted and think very little about the science and technology behind every day objects. Other information was put on to a USB memory stick, with the hope that, whatever technology is in place in 2800, those who follow us will be able to retrieve the data!”

The capsule has been placed into the Cathedral buttress as part of the current restoration work.
