Lichfield RUFC captain Dave Bassett has hailed his side’s double winning season as a “fantastic achievement”.

A win against Old Salts added the league title to the Midlands Intermediate Cup they won earlier in the season – a result which means they are within touching distance of a national final at Twickenham.

And while Bassett has acknowledged the efforts of his colleagues, he’s also keen that they round of the season in style.

He said:

“So far the season has been excellent to win the double is a fantastic achievement by the guys. There have been some big tests of character along the way, on Saturday that was certainly the case, and every time we have responded and risen to the challenge.

“That said we have still not finished and to get to Twickenham would be huge, not just for the players, but for the whole club and a great reward for our supporters who have been fantastic in travelling around this season. Our challenge now is to finish off the season in style against Ashbourne on Saturday then put in the performance of the season againt Northern which we hopefully take us to Twickers.

“We must then build on the success of this season through the off and pre-season to ensure we back this year up next season.”
