Kidsgrove Athletic LFC 0 Lichfield Diamonds Ladies 1

Lichfield Diamonds found a Kidsgrove side that needed a victory to avoid relegation were hard nut to crack as they fought tooth and nail for every ball.

It wasn’t the sort of game where Lichfield would have wanted their regular goalkeeper stranded in Essex, but Karen Clough and Katy Rose produced capable performances between the sticks in each half.

The defensive line of Mags Bailey, Emma Dagley, Louise Sharrod and Sarah Sampson also performed well to ensure Lichfield came away with a clean sheet.

Striker Lyndsey Hopton worked tirelessly up front throughout the game and received some harsh treatment from her markers, but when she was joined by Clough in the second half the two quickly combined as Hopton’s angled ball put her team-mate away to calmy lift the ball past the advancing keeper.

Having player of the match Jo hearne back from injury has transformed Diamonds central midfield and Nora Caddick has rolled back the years to play some of her best football since joining Lichfield.

The defeat relegated Kidsgrove, but if they can keep the squad together they will surely bounce straight back.

Diamonds are now building their squads for all ages for next season and anyone interested can call 01543 254069 or visit www.lichfielddiamonds.org.uk.
