Chasetown Ladies 3 Burntwood Phoenix 3

With just a few matches left to play, this match between league leaders (Chasetown) and second placed Burntwood was effectively a title decider. Burntwood Phoenix needed to win being 3 points behind Chasetown but with a superior goal difference. The game lived up to its billing with both sides playing some excellent football. Approaching 200 supporters watched this match at Burntwood Leisure Centre.

A strong Burntwood side had the best of the opening exchanges but Chasetown took the lead following an excellent corner by Jodie Kinsey. Jade Arber, who had flown back from working in Portugal to play in this game, bravely headed in after 12 minutes. The Chasetown defence played brilliantly to hold Burntwood at bay for most of the first half but things swung Burntwood’s way at the end of the half with two late goals. Laura Heeley scored from a corner following a good save by Becky Troth from an excellent shot by Emma Baggott. Then just as the referee was thinking about half-time Kelly Rudge broke free and slotted the ball past Becky for a 2-1 half-time lead to Burntwood.

The same pattern of play prevailed for much of the second half, a tight game of few clear cut chances. At 2-1 down it was time for a tactical change by Chasetown. The injured Lyndsey Turner was replaced by Abi Picken and the team was reshuffled to release Charlotte Bull from defensive duties to immediate effect. Charlotte raced down the left and put in an excellent cross that was initially cleared by Burntwood but Jodie Kinsey latched onto the loose ball and drove strongly into the six yard area. With the goal at her mercy she found the back of the net (2-2). Five minutes later Burntwood were back in front. The dangerous Emma Baggott found herself in space and hit the back of the net to put Burntwood back in the driving seat. Burntwood had further chances to score in the final 20 minutes but Becky Troth was in outstanding form in the Chasetown goal saving numerous times at the striker’s feet.

Ten minutes from time and Chasetown got the equalizer. Again Charlotte raced down the wing and delivered the cross. A goalmouth scramble and Jade collected the ball with defenders on her back. She twisted and turned creating the opening and tucked the ball in to the delight of the Chasetown supporters.
