Lichfield and Burntwood businesses warned about new email scam

Businesses in Lichfield and Burntwood are being warned about a new scam.

Emails have been sent out claiming to be from a charity organisation acting on behalf of schools across Staffordshire.

The email states that resource packs will be sent to nominated schools to raise awareness of child safety issues. It goes on to say that sponsorship packs of up to £2,000 are available.

The company making the claims has been traced to the Manchester area and is known to trading standards there. Businesses here are being advised not to respond to the emails and report them to Trading Standards.

Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture Ben Adams said:

“Unfortunately some businesses are set up to make money by duping people into believing they are donating money to charity; in this case, for local schools.
The advice is simple – treat such emails as you would any cold call and don’t respond until you’ve first verified that it is a legitimate charity.
”

Businesses should contact trading standards with any concerns on 08453 303 313. People can check that a charity is legitimate by contacting the Charity Commission at www.charity-commission.gov.uk.
