In Charlie Blakemore’s absence, Andy Cox rang the changes during the night, utilising a 20-man squad, giving plenty of reserve players a chance to prove they deserve a chance at the first team squad.

In fact, several of the fringe-men acquitted themselves very well in the second half and looked like they may be knocking on the door of the senior squad in the future.

The game was not as fast-flowing as Tuesday’s Villa game, but The Scholars put in a good performance to keep The Lambs at bay.

Tamworth challenged on 26 minutes when Liam McDonald’s tame free-kick was easily claimed by Ryan Price, and then a minute later, Chasetown went close when Lee Parsons shot was blocked by a visiting defender, flinging himself in front of the effort.

Price was called into action again, to keep out a low shot from Danny Thomas, and on the stroke of half-time, Harry Milton’s diving header flashed wide of the post.

Mark Wiggins replaced Ryan Price in the Chasetown goal and was beaten within two minutes of his introduction when a fluked cross from Liam McDonald flew beyond the young keeper.

Neat inter-passing from the visitors just after the hour mark, resulted in McDonald firing low towards the corner of the net, only for Wiggins to superbly kick the attempt away.

With only three recognised first teamers on the pitch for the majority of the second half, the Scholars created a number of chances. With 15 minutes left, a lovely through ball from Theo Robinson sent Adebayo Ajidahun clear and the youngster drove the chance over the bar.

Six minutes later, Ajidahun was just wide with a right-footer and Westwood’s shot was parried by replacement keeper Sam Andrew.

Finishing strongly, Jake Sedgemore’s free-kick was charged down by Andrew, who also produced a save from Theo Robinson, but Chasetown could not break through.
