Match report: Chasetown FC 1 Worksop Town 2

Mar 12, 2012 by Dave Goddard

Anthony Maguire made a scoring debut for Chasetown but they still lost out 2-1 to Worksop Town.

The former Stafford and Rushall man’s fine debut form was the high point of an afternoon where the Scholars showed signs of improvement following their recent poor run of form, but the Tigers would put in a strong showing to take the points.

On a near perfect afternoon for football the Scholars defence cleared two early free kicks for the visitors, skipper Courtney Pitt found their first chance on 12 minutes but his free kick was put out for a corner with Charlie Raglan closing in.

Danny Smith outpaced the Tigers defence two minutes later but his shot flew just outside the post, and it was the visitors who would take the lead on 31 minutes.

Ashley Burbeary beat Raglan to a ball from the midfield and he fired past Ryan Price – playing with an injured finger – in the Chasetown goal.

On the stroke of half time the Tigers doubled their lead when Luke Shields met skipper Mark Hudson’s free kick and headed home at the near post.

Worksop worked to protect their lead in the second half while Massiah McDonald went close but saw his chance cleared for a corner by Mark Branch.

On 58 minutes appeals from the Scholars and supporters for a penalty for handball were turned down and a corner was awarded instead, the kick being cleared and Lee Beeson’s follow-up flying wide.

Dean Perrow twice broke clear but was halted by the offside flag, while Maguire and Jordan Archer set up Gary Birch but his cross could not quite reach Perrow.

Four minutes from time Pitt sent a ball over the top and Maguire was on hand to smash the ball into the roof of the net for his maiden Scholars goal just one day after joining the side.

Chasetown now get ready to travel north east to North Ferriby United tomorrow (March 13), kick-off 7.45pm, before visiting Stafford Rangers next Saturday (3pm).
