Birdsong will provide the soundtrack for a dawn walk in Lichfield.

To celebrate International Dawn Chorus Day, Lichfield District Council’s park teams will be joined by bird expert Bob Russon for an early morning walk in Beacon Park from 4am to 6am on Sunday (May 6).

“The dawn chorus is the bird’s way of greeting first light and proclaiming their territory,” said Bob. “Many returning migrants should have arrived and will be singing to attract a mate so we should hear Chiffchaffs, Willow Warblers, Blackcaps and possibly Garden Warblers.

“All the resident birds will also be in full song with Blackbirds, Wrens, Song Thrushes, Chaffinches and many others competing for air space. Given decent weather and a bit of luck about thirty species should be heard and seen on this walk.”

Bob has been a birdwatcher for over fifty years and is a lifelong member of the RSPB. He has been a member of the Lichfield RSPB group for well over 30 years, carrying out various roles as a committee member. Since 2009 he has been group leader and has led a variety of walks for Lichfield District Council.

The Dawn Chorus Walk costs £2.50 for adults and £1 for children. The walk will set off from Beacon Park’s Discovery Hub (next to the bowling greens). Places can be booked by calling the parks team on 01543 308869 or by emailing [email protected].
