Blind and partially-sighted people are being invited to find out more about what libraries in Lichfield and Burntwood have to offer.

Staffordshire County Council’s Make a Noise in Libraries Fortnight runs until June 24.

Among the services on offer for people who are blind or partially-sighted are:

  • A wide range of books in large print, audio books and a large music collection.
  • Visually impaired readers are not charged for borrowing or requesting books, audio or music.
  • For people who are registered blind or partially sighted, your local Staffordshire Library can arrange a subscription to the audio books by post service from the Royal National Institute of the Blind.
  • Your library can also direct you to books in Braille and Moon from the Royal National Institute for the Blind.
  • County library computers have software that can magnify text, read documents and webpages aloud and allow you to choose colour schemes that will meet your sight requirements. Every library also has a large print keyboard.
  • Some of the county’s larger libraries also have magnification readers to help make printed text more accessible.
  • Staffordshire Library members who have a computer at home can also access a wide range of e-books from the website. E-books deliver an added benefit for the visually impaired, as customers are able to alter the size of the text on their eReader to meet their needs. Unlike conventional books, they can also be borrowed outside library opening hours at a time to suit you.

County Councillor Pat Corfield said: “Make a Noise in Libraries Fortnight is a great opportunity to highlight the wide range of services Staffordshire Libraries have to offer Lichfield’s blind and partially sighted residents.

“Local libraries play a vital role in bringing communities together and putting people in touch with services that can help improve their lives.”
