A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run crash which left a dog walker and his pet dead in Lichfield.

The man, from Lichfield, was arrested in the city on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and taken into custody at Burton for interview.

The incident happened on the Burton Road in Streethay at around 7.40am this morning (December 14).

The victim, a local man who was believed to have been walking his dog, was on the pavement when a car, which was travelling from the A38 towards Lichfield city centre, hit him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The small light-coloured car – believed to be a Rover – did not stop but carried on towards Lichfield.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, nothing could be done to save the man who was confirmed dead at the scene.”

The incident led to the Burton Road being closed for almost eight hours, while traffic on the A38 also saw delays as one lane of the southbound carriageway at Streethay was also shut.

Local residents have already begun leaving flowers at the scene.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or who has any information about the car, should ring Staffordshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 88 of 14 December. Alternatively, they can ring independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
