A primary school is set to make history at Lichfield Cathedral.

Previously, visiting choirs have only been made up of adults or secondary school students.

But now pupils from St Michael’s Church of England Primary School in Pelsall will be the first youngsters to sing the whole of Choral Evensong as a visiting group.

Their performance at 5.30pm on April 17 comes after they were spotted by the Cathedral’s director of music Cathy Lamb.

“I have been involved as an adjudicator at a super primary singing festival based at Forest Arts’ Centre in Walsall for some time and St Michael’s School Choir have always been impressive.

“Evensong is such a specialised and rarefied area of music making that I was quite taken aback when their teacher mentioned he would love them to do Evensong, but I instantly knew they would be up to the challenge.

“I have heard the choir in rehearsal and they are going to be truly fantastic. They are even taking on the signing of psalms – which is no easy task!”
