Lichfield RUFC’s development side closing in on league title

Lichfield RUFC’s development team took another big step towards clinching their own league title with a fine away win at Malvern.

They started brightly and when Olly Taylor-Tibbott easily outpaced the home defence to score their first try after only four minutes and Tom Cokayne converted from the touchline.

The signs were encouraging, but Malvern came straight back with a try of their own four minutes later and the mould was set for a game which ebbed and flowed from then on.

Lichfield took the lead again when Neil Antcliffe put fellow centre Matty Brown through a lovely gap to score a simple try near the posts. Tom Cokayne converted.

Malvern then replied again with a converted try from a move which also saw Dan Skidmore sent to the bin.

Despite being a man down Lichfield created the last try of the first half when Neil Antcliffe scored and Tom Cokayne again added the extra points.

When Olly Taylor-Tibbott also added the first score after the interval it looked as if Lichfield might finally get some breathing space but Malvern came back again to keep themselves in the game.

Then followed a sustained period of forward pressure which culminated with Mike Lote deservedly getting his name on the scoresheet.

Malvern were still not beaten though and they managed to pull themselves back within two scores before Dan Skidmore had the final say when he forced his way over with the last move of the match.

With two more league matches and a cup final still to come, Lichfield’s development squad can be pretty optimistic about finishing a successful season with at least one trophy to show for it.
