Whittington set for first food and craft market of the year

Whittington’s first local food and craft market of the year is taking place on Saturday (April 19).

Established four years ago, the event has gone from strength to strength with an increasing number of stalls and visitors from across a wide area.

The market was established by Whittington and Fisherwick Environment Group (WFEG), with support from St Giles Church, to promote locally grown and produced food as part of a wider drive to encourage sustainable and low carbon lifestyles.

One of the first producers to join in was Woodhouse Farm, which is restoring the old Grade 2 listed walled garden at Fisherwick, and sells its own rare beef and pork, including their own sausages, as well as delicious seasonal vegetbables and fruit.

A spokesperson said: “Woodhouse has been joined by others, including Marianne Finch’s Tart! with its truly wonderful selection of pies and tarts, including roasted sweet potato and goats cheese and, for the sweet-toothed, pear and almond buttercake.

“Also taking part this month will be Cake, Rattle and Roll with scrumptious traybakes, St Giles Church Produce stall with homemade preserves and other goodies and Husse Lichfield pet foods. Entertainment will be provided by the Hotpots clog dancer and music duo.

“This month’s market will also feature the launch of WFEG’s exciting new bee-friendly project to promote bee and wildlife friendly gardening. Lots of information will be available on the kinds of plants to put in gardens to encourage insects and wildlife all the year round. There will also be the launch of a wildlife gardening competition.”

The market runs from 9.30am to 1pm in the Bell Car Park on Main Street on the third Saturday of every month from April to November.
