Prime Minister ‘deeply saddened’ as Stephen Sutton loses cancer battle

The Prime Minister has paid tribute to Burntwood teenager Stephen Sutton.

The 19-year-old lost his battle with cancer earlier today (May 14) after raising more than £3.2million for charity.

David Cameron – who visited the former Chase Terrace Technology College student during his final weeks – said he was “deeply saddened” by the news of his death.

“His spirit, bravery and fundraising were all an inspiration,” the Prime Minister said.

Labour leader Ed Miliband added: “Tragic news that Stephen Sutton has passed away. His bravery and determination to live life to the full was an inspiration to us all.”

Celebrities had backed Stephen’s fundraising challenge and many have been paying tribute on social media.

Comedian Ricky Gervais wrote: “RIP Stephen Sutton. A true hero and inspiration to us all.”

Politician John Prescott said: “He achieved more in his 19 years than most do in a lifetime.”

TV presenter Clare Balding added: “Desperately sad to heat that Stephen Sutton has died. I feel privileged to have met him and heard him speak.”

Olympic medalist Katharine Merry said: “The world has lost an inspirational young man.”
