The result – followed by a sixth spot in the weekend’s second race – leaves Whorton-Eales fourth in the standings after he fought a rearguard action behind leader and team-mate Josh Cook for much of the early stages.

He was eventually overtaken by Paul Rivett midway through the race, but kept his rival on his toes, eventually finishing in third, just 0.8 seconds adrift of Rivett.

“All we need at the minute is these podium finishes”, said Whorton-Eales. “We got up to second behind Josh and it would have been nice if it was plain sailing with us two pulling away from the pack but Rivett’s always fast and he knows how to drive a Clio.

“Once he got in the tow, there was no keeping him behind. He read the corners well and knew where I was putting the car.”

Whorton-Eales sits fourth position in the main championship standings and third in the Graduate Cup class for younger competitors ahead of the next races at Knockhill on August 23 and 24.
