It was a credit to an injury-struck Barwell that they continued with the fixture despite having only 11 players to choose from for this final pre-season friendly for both sides.

Chasetown’s summer signing Nathan Waite scored his fourth goal in pre-season with a sweet first half finish giving the home side the victory.

In the 29th minute, Waite reacted quickly to rob Barwell defender Guy Hadland and showed great composure to bend the ball low beyond Liam Castle.

Four minutes earlier, Waite had almost broken the deadlock with a curling effort which may just have been going a whisker wide but Castle flung himself full length to his left to push the effort wide for a corner regardless.

It was Waite again seven minutes into the second half that almost doubled the winning margin. Under pressure from Danny Jenno, the Chase number ten flicked a chance goalwards which had Castle flat-footed as the ball whistled a whisker wide of the upright.

Nick Wellecomme thought he had scored a neat lob over the visiting keeper but an offside flag for a tight offside denied Chasetown’s leading marksman from last season.

Chasetown: Bateman, Johnson, Ravenhill, Slater, Robinson (George, 81 mins), Downes, Brown (Butler, 73 mins), Parsons, Wellecomme (Bottomer, 85 mins), Waite (Luckie, 85 mins), Davies (Danny J Edwards, 81 mins). Subs: Evans, McDonald, Haynes, Pond, Beckett, Danny Edwards, Nadat.
