Burntwood RUFC set to kick-off new season at Tamworth

After a tough month of pre-season friendly fixtures, Burntwood Rugby Club open the new campaign with a Staffordshire Senior Cup tie away to Tamworth on Saturday (September 6).

With Leek, Lichfield and Longton not entering the county cup competition and Willenhall opting to enter the Staffs Intermediate Cup, Burntwood find themselves in the Senior Cup as the lowest ranked team so it will be a demanding start.

However, the squad has faced Old Saltleians and Stafford, both in Tamworth’s league, in warm-up games plus hosting a President’s Invitation side and then rounding things off with a trip to Haringey Rhinos in North London before the real action begins.

The Midlands 3 West North (M3WN) league season also starts with an away fixture with a visit to Uttoxeter on September 13, before Burntwood welcome Wednesbury to The Sportsway on the September 20.

There are few changes to the committee and captains for the new season. Ian Jones continues as 1st XV skipper but the club will have a new Club Captain in Matt Sishton.

In player comings and goings, Hal Gozukucuk and Corey Douglas have returned to the fold to add to recruits from Tewkesbury and Tamworth. Players moving out include Jack Neal and Thomas Cooper to Burton and Danny Poole to Bournville.

Besides the M3WN fixtures, Burntwood will have two sides in the Staffordshire Merit Tables and will also be fielding a colts side for the first time in several seasons and they will play in the North Midlands Colts League.

New and returning players and supporters are always welcome to The Sportsway. For any details about club fixtures and functions either visit the club, which is open every weekday from 4pm and weekends all day, or call 01543 676651.
