Late Liam Holt strike secures all three points for in-form Lichfield City FC

Goals from Ahmet Bilgimer and Liam Holt were enough to secure another three points for Lichfield City FC.

The result leaves Simon Bell’s side in seventh place in the Midland Football League Division One, six points adrift of leaders Littleton, but with three games in hand.

Victory was even more satisfying for a Lichfield side who have often found Atherstone a tough nut to crack.

But bouyed by new signings Dan Westwood and Dean Withers to their squad, City were out of the blocks quickly.

Westwood nearly made the dream start to life in Lichfield colours when he struck the upright in the first minute.

In fact, Dan Thurstance, Ashley Evans and Holt all saw chances spurned in the opening period – and it looked like they would pay a high price when Atherstone got themselves in front on the stroke of half time. Dan Gaunt was first to react to a loose ball after Craig Johnson had saved well.

But rather than lick their wounds after the break, City resumed their attacking intent and levelled on 49 minutes when Bilgimer found the net.

Holt went close minutes later before seeing a trademark free-kick tipped onto the post.

Perry was next to go close, before Bilgimer struck the crossbar as the Atherstone goal began to lead a charmed life.

Just as it looked like City would be frustrated, Holt had another chance to set his sights from a dead ball. With just a minute left on the clock he curled the ball over the wall and into the top corner to seal all three points.
