UKIP's Dave Woodhead, John Rackham, Jeff Sheriff and Tom Lenton in Lichfield

UKIP’s message is reaching a wide audience across Lichfield and Burntwood, according to their parliamentary candidate John Rackham.

The 69-year-old, who owns the Kings Head Pub on Bird Street, has had a stall on Market Street in recent weeks – and will continue to do so from 10am to 2pm every Saturday before polling day.

The parliamentary candidate for Lichfield believes UKIP’s call for change are hitting home with members of the public.

He said: “The stall is fantastic. Seventy per cent of people came over and engaged with us positively by stopping to have a chat and by picking up our leaflets.

“Twenty per cent completely ignored us, which is fine, and the remaining 10 per cent said they completely disagreed with our policies, which again is fine.”

The candidates standing in the Lichfield constituency in May are:

  • Andy Bennetts – Class War
  • Michael Fabricant – Conservatives
  • Robert Pass – Green Party
  • John Rackham – UKIP
  • Paul Ray – Lib Dem
  • Chris Worsey – Labour

Is that Jeff Sheriff? He does exist! Where was he when Burntwood’s Sure Start were threatened with closure? See http://tiny.cc/r5ccxx. Where was he when the County Council wanted to reduce Burntwood’s Library hours? Where was he when the County Council wanted to close the recycling centre? And why did he he turn up at February’s County Council meeting to vote for the Conservative budget that supports these cuts?

70% – 20% – 10%!!

Arbitrary figures are arbitrary.

Yes I saw you there on Saturday, you could spot the people who were engaging with you. They were white, middle aged etc… pretty much like your photo.

To be frank I’m against pigeon-holing people, but I’d hardly call your support “broad.”

Is Mr Rackham standing in the street reading out the UKIP manifesto like he did at the Cathedral hustings or have some of the other people in the picture memorised it?

I actually ended up feeling sorry for John Rackham on Sunday. He obviously (like most of the electorate) has no clue as to what the UKIP solutions are to any of the problems the country faces. Well, apart from: “Blame it all on the foreigners” of course.

I was stood not far from the UKIP stand for about 25 minutes on Saturday (waiting for Mrs Bob to shop in DPs), and I can honestly say I didn’t see more than 5 or 6 people stop and talk or take a leaflet from the 4 people in the photo above. Most of the 200+ people that passed them ignored them completely, with most who were asked ‘would you like a leaflet’ said no thanks or worse.
70%? I don’t think that figure comes close to even the number of people who passed them by, let alone engaged with them.
