Michael Fabricant with Dr Helen Stokes-Lampard

A parliamentary candidate for Lichfield and Burntwood has been to learn more about the work of frontline NHS staff.

Michael Fabricant, who will hope to retain the seat for the Conservatives, visited The Cloisters Medical Practice in Lichfield.

He met nursing and administrative staff to hear about the challenges they face and see how changes such as electronic records and prescriptions have improved their work.

Mr Fabricant was then invited to sit in on consultations with GP Dr Helen Stokes-Lampard.

“We have all probably been to a doctor’s surgery and been on the ‘receiving end’, but this visit gave me an invaluable insight into the hard work of a dedicated team of professionals behind the scenes,” he said.

“The work of the individual GPs, their nursing and administrative staff, is the front end of our NHS and without their expertise the system would collapse. I am hugely impressed.

“I hope to make use of my experience and the contacts I have made at the surgery as a valuable resource when considering NHS matters in the House of Commons.”

Dr Stokes-Lampard said it was important for the voice of staff on the NHS shop floor to have their voices heard.

“It was tremendous for the patients and staff to see Mr Fabricatn take the time to come and really understand how tough it can be on the front line in the NHS,” she said.

“All staff in Primary Care are working harder than ever to provide a good service with fewer resources, and it was a great morale booster for everyone to feel that our concerns are being recognised.”

The candidates standing in the Lichfield constituency in May are:

Well he could hardly have visited either of the two new health centres planned for Burntwood because they were cancelled under the Tory led Coalition and my Freedom of Information request revealed that Mr Fabricant made no representations, not even a letter, on behalf of his Burntwood and Hammerwich constituents.
