UKIP's Dave Woodhead, John Rackham, Jeff Sheriff and Tom Lenton in Lichfield

UKIP are living in the past, and Lichfield and Burntwood residents will see through it before polling day, claims Michael Fabricant.

The Conservative candidate had proposed an election pact between UKIP and the Conservative Party back in 2012.

However, the former Tory vice-chairman revealed to LichfieldLive that he merely wanted Prime Minister David Cameron to take Nigel Farage’s party seriously.

On May 7 Mr Fabricant will be up against UKIP’s John Rackham, who owns the King’s Head pub on Bird Street.

He said: “I mentioned the pact with UKIP for publicity. I knew that David would never go for it.

“But I felt my party was being very disrespectful and dismissive of UKIP’s politicians, members and voters.

“I kept talking to Number 10 about this and they repeatedly told me that UKIP were just a flash in the pan, which left me increasingly frustrated.

“But let’s be honest UKIP supporters do long for the past, hate the present and are fearful of the future.”

However, Mr Rackham disagreed with his rival.

He said: “I wouldn’t agree that we long for the past or that we hate the present. We are fearful of the future and that is why UKIP wants to change it.

“I want to bring back sovereignty for the wonderful multi-cultural society we already live in.”

The candidates standing in the Lichfield constituency in May are:

  • Andy Bennetts – Class War
  • Michael Fabricant – Conservatives
  • Robert Pass – Green Party
  • John Rackham – UKIP
  • Paul Ray – Lib Dem
  • Chris Worsey – Labour

Hhhhmmmmmmm…
“…I felt my party was being very disrespectful and dismissive of UKIP’s politicians, members and voters…But let’s be honest UKIP supporters do long for the past, hate the present and are fearful of the future.”

I’m no fan of UKIP or UKIPers and I’m sure they’re all big enough and ugly enough to defend themselves. But that shameless and easy contradiction from Mr Fabricant does need highlighting.

It is quite typical of Mr Fabricant, but not as predictable as: “I mentioned the pact with UKIP for publicity.”
His own, obviously.

If Fabbo has bothered to turn up to the hustings on Saturday he would have heard the Class War candidate explain why people should reject UKIP to the biggest applause of the event.
