Cllr Ben Adams, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet member for learning and skills, said: “Despite increasing pressure on school places, we still manage to offer the majority of parents their first-choice secondary school.

“We know the admissions process can be quite daunting for a lot of parents, so we do as much as we can to make the process as easy as possible.”

The council have offered advice to help parents get the place they want for their children.

  • Apply for at least three schools – only applying for one means parents may end up getting a school they would not have chosen.
  • Ensure one is the catchment area school.
  • Parents should ensure they understand the admission criteria for their chosen schools.
  • Visit preferred schools and talk to teachers to ensure it is the right one for the child.
