Chasetown FC knocked out of the cup by Kidsgrove Athletic

Chasetown FC failed to hold onto their lead as Kidsgrove progressed into the next round at the expense of their Staffordshire neighbours.

After a quiet opening the Scholars went in front midway through the first half. George Washbourne teed up Paul Sullivan, whose left-footer was tipped onto the post by Ben Chapman and Nick Turton tapped the rebound into an empty net.

But Kidsgrove were level five minutes before half time after a cross from the left was headed home by Andy Kinsey.

The Scholars almost went into the break in front when Sullivan twisted and turned in the area before striking the base of the post for the second time.

Early in the second period Turton thought he had restored Chasetown’s lead but the assistant’s flag ruled out the effort for offside.

Kidsgrove went straight up the other end and John Bateman flung himself across to deny an almost certain goal from Joe Woolley.

The decisive goal came in the 75th minute after Chasetown had conceded possession in the defensive third leading to a Kidsgrove corner which saw Paul Taylor’s header deflected past Bateman.
