Leading scorer Ryan Wynter fired inches wide of the upright after 15 minutes before The Scholars also had a penalty appeal turned away when George Washbourne’s shot flicked off the thigh of defender Dominic Allen and onto his hand on the line.

To add insult to injury, Belper took the lead immediately after that incident and Evan Garnett tucked home after a pass from Robert Stevenson.

Garnett added his second minutes later as the visitors turned the game on its head with a tidy finish from close range.

Four minutes into the second half, Stan Mugisha drilled a shot just wide of Danny Haystead’s right hand post as The Scholars looked to find a way back into the game.

Chasetown eventually reduced the deficit after 55 minutes when the ball ran loose in the penalty area and Rhys Thompson capitalised to fire home.

The Scholars almost levelled via a lobbed effort from Mugisha that rippled the top of the netting after going a whisker over the crossbar.

Hayward then kicked away a Mugisha shot at his near post as Dave Stringer’s men strived for an elusive equaliser.

But ten minutes from the end Belper clinched the points with a third clinical finish from Garnett.

The home side’s afternoon was summed up by a James Dance missed penalty in the final minute.
