Lichfield City FC third in the table after victory over Southam United

Lichfield City FC confirmed their place as title hopefuls after scooping another three points.

The clash with Southam wasn’t without incident though as Gary Birch saw his side awarded three penalties in the game.

Things didn’t start well for City though as Tom O’Callaghan put the visitors ahead.

But a penalty for a handball in the box gave Tony Clarke the chance to level and the in-form striker made no mistake from 12 yards.

Clarke soon had another chance from the same distance after a foul in the box saw a second spot-kick awarded, but he failed to make this one count as the keeper saved.

But the turnaround was completed when Dave Yonwin slotted home into the bottom corner.

The second half saw Lichfield continue to press and they were rewarded with a third penalty of the afternoon when the keeper was judged to have brought down a City player.

Clarke again stepped up and made it two out of three to seal the victory.

City lie third in Division One of the Midland Football League, three points behind Nuneaton Griff with a game in hand, and ten points adrift of runaway leaders Coventry United.

Lichfield return to action again next weekend with a home tie against Pilkington XXX.
